When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?
• After you miss your period
• About 2–3 weeks after unprotected sex
• If you’re experiencing early pregnancy symptoms, including tender, swollen breasts, fatigue, nausea, and increased urination”
How Accurate is a Self-Administered Pregnancy Test?
When taken after the first day of a missed period, a self-administered pregnancy test is highly accurate—generally more than 99% accurate.
Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. This hormone begins to appear in the body after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.
During the early weeks of pregnancy, the amount of hCG increases rapidly, typically doubling every two to three days. Because of this, waiting a few days after a missed period can make it more likely that the test will detect the hormone if you are pregnant.
If you’re unsure about your results or have questions, our team is happy to help you understand what your test means and discuss possible next steps.

Common Questions About Pregnancy Testing
Sometimes a pregnancy test can be taken too early to detect pregnancy. If your test is negative but your period has not started, you may want to wait a few days and take another test.
Stress, illness, changes in routine, and hormonal fluctuations can also affect your cycle. If you have questions or would like to take another test, we would be happy to help. What if my pregnancy test is negative but my period still hasn’t started?
Early pregnancy symptoms can vary from person to person, but common signs may include:
• A missed period
• Nausea or vomiting
• Tender or swollen breasts
• Fatigue
• Frequent urination
These symptoms can also be caused by other factors, so the best way to know for sure if you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test.
Most pregnancy tests are most accurate after the first day of a missed period. This allows enough time for the pregnancy hormone (hCG) to build up in the body.
If you take a test earlier, the hormone level may still be too low for the test to detect, which could result in a negative result even if you are pregnant.
If your pregnancy test is positive, it’s normal to have many questions about what comes next.
